Northeast Georgia Health System and Lifepoint Rehabilitation Celebrate Opening of Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (June 3, 2025) – This week, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a business unit of Lifepoint Health, celebrated the opening of Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, a free-standing, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Gainesville on Limestone Parkway.

“This is a remarkable step forward for specialty care in our region,” said Kevin Gohman, executive director of Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute. “Our diverse team of clinicians will provide physical medicine oversight; occupational, physical and speech therapies; internal medicine and medical/surgical consultations all with the support of leading-edge rehabilitation technology. With the capabilities we have at Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, we will be able to care for patients with more complex medical needs in spaces custom-designed for every stage of their recovery.”

The 61,000-square-foot facility nearly doubles the patient capacity of the existing 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville. All services currently provided at NGMC are transitioning to Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute.

"The opening of Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute is a direct reflection of our commitment to meeting the growing needs of patients in our region," said Kevin Matson, vice president of regional hospitals for NGHS. “It’s an exciting milestone not only for NGHS, but for every patient who will benefit from this advanced level of care.”

With large, multidisciplinary therapy gyms, a micro-apartment for practicing activities of daily living, and innovative robotics and rehabilitation technology – like a Smart Car, a Senaptec Sensory Station, a virtual reality platform for neuro rehabilitation and more – patients benefit from customized, evidence-driven therapy plans. Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute also boasts a secured brain-injury unit for those recovering from acquired brain injuries and stroke, an on-site dedicated pharmacy and rooms designed for treating dialysis patients.

“We are excited to officially welcome patients to Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute as we expand access to inpatient rehabilitation care in Hall County and the surrounding region,” said Russ Bailey, president of Lifepoint Rehabilitation. “We know that patient-centered rehabilitation care has a profound impact on the lives of those recovering from illness, injury and surgery, as well as for those managing chronic conditions. At Lifepoint Rehabilitation, we’re committed to returning our patients to their lives and families as soon as possible. I can’t wait to see all that we will accomplish on behalf of patients throughout northeast Georgia in the years to come.”

Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute is the result of a joint venture partnership between NGHS and Lifepoint Rehabilitation. Lifepoint Rehabilitation will manage day-to-day operations, as the facility joins Lifepoint’s network of more than 45 inpatient rehabilitation facilities nationwide.
