Sue Shugart Appointed CEO of KershawHealth

(Camden, South Carolina – August 13, 2019) – KershawHealth announced today that Sue Shugart has been named chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital, effective immediately. Shugart has been serving as interim CEO of KershawHealth since April, following the departure of the hospital’s former CEO Terry Gunn. Gunn is now market CEO of Providence Health, another LifePoint Health facility in Columbia, South Carolina, and KershawHealth. Shugart will report directly to Gunn in her role as CEO.

“Since stepping into the interim leadership role, Sue has demonstrated a strong commitment to our mission of Making Communities Healthier, a passion for enhancing quality care and patient safety, and the ability to cultivate positive relationships both within and beyond the hospital’s walls,” said Jamie Carter, president of LifePoint Health’s Eastern Division, of which KershawHealth is a part. “It quickly became clear that Sue was the ideal leader to take the reins of KershawHealth on a permanent basis, and we look forward to an even brighter future ahead for the hospital under her leadership.”

Shugart previously served as chief operating officer (COO) of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, South Carolina, and as interim CEO of Saline Health System in Benton, Arkansas – both of which are LifePoint facilities. She has held numerous other hospital leadership roles throughout her career, including serving as chief administrative officer of Baptist Easley Hospital in Easley, South Carolina, and as COO for Clarendon Health System in Manning, South Carolina.

“Sue has already been a tremendous asset to Kershaw Health,” said Roy Fakoury, chair of the hospital's Board of Trustees. “She firmly believes in our mission and will be instrumental in taking the hospital to new heights in the years ahead. We are thrilled to officially welcome Sue to the KershawHealth family.”

Shugart earned a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and a master’s degree from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a Class of 2000 graduate of Leadership South Carolina.

Additionally, Shugart is board-certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and served on the national Council of Regents representing South Carolina from 2014-2017. She is also a past president of the South Carolina Chapter of ACHE.

“I am excited to continue working with the KershawHealth team in improving the health and well-being of the Camden community and surrounding areas,” said Shugart. “I consider it a great privilege to help the hospital continue its legacy of providing high quality care close to home and look forward to further contributing to the excellent work already happening here.”
